Get down to Salford Quays for The Quays Open Day

Salford Quays

Salford Quays

Salford Quays will host an extravaganza of activities for people of all ages on Saturday 18 February. There will be guest appearances from CBBC favourites, interactive games, the chance to walk with a dinosaur, see items straight from the set of Steven Spielberg’s ‘War Horse’ film and even ride a powerboat.

Coinciding with half term, all the venues on The Quays are opening their doors for behind the scenes activities and special events for the whole family.

Newest arrivals to Salford, BBC North, will be celebrating the tenth birthday of children’s television with ten events including the chance to meet Blue Peter presenters and see performances from Mister Bloom.

At the Lowry Outlet Mall children can ‘walk with a dinosaur’ by seeing a six foot animatronic Stegosaurus in its own Jurassic setting, and get up close with large dinosaur models of a Raptor and Triceratops too!

Salford University building will play host to an array of digital installations and interactive games for those who want to check out some new technology

Visit IWMNorth’s new free exhibition ‘Once Upon A Wartime’ which brings to life the drama of acclaimed novels about wartime for children and is accompanied by storytelling and creative craft activities. On display for the first time are objects straight from Steven Spielberg’s ‘War Horse’ film set.

Other attractions taking part are the Watersports centre where you can take a free powerboat ride around The Quays. A free link bus will also take people to meet the Tudors at nearby Ordsall Hall, open especially on this Saturday afternoon.

The Lowry is giving visitors a unique chance to watch the world-renowned Chinese State Circus warm up before their show. There’s also a £5 discount on Chinese State Circus tickets for the 2 pm matinee for Salford residents.

The event is the first of a series of exciting events taking place throughout 2012 being developed by the cultural, sporting, leisure and retail attractions based on The Quays and is one of the highlights of The Quays Arts and Cultural Events Programme. The event is being supported by Salford City Council.

Cllr John Merry, leader of Salford City Council said: “We are tremendously proud of how Salford Quays has taken shape and we want families to come and see for themselves just what is on offer. This promises to be a fantastic day out with something to appeal to all ages.”

For info on all events see www.thequays.org.uk/qod. You’ll also find info on where to eat and drink throughout the day.
