Refugee Week 2010

Refugee Week 2010

Refugee Week

Refugee Week 2010 will take place from 14 to 20 June and there will be free events and activities happening around Salford for everyone to come and celebrate together.

Salford Refugee Week is now in its fourth year and is part of a wider UK programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK arts, culture, economy and wider society and encourages a better understanding between communities.

The week also aims to show the proud history of Britain in welcoming people escaping terrible situations in their home countries and to get rid of some of the myths that fly around about refugee and asylum seekers. Most of all it is about Salford coming together to show that it is a welcoming city.

You can also hear (via a portable CD player) refugee voices from Rwanda, Afghanistan and Palestine interacting with border immigration officials and the media.

The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO)

IDAHO

The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) is celebrated around the world on 17 May each year. On this day in 1992 homosexuality was removed from the international classification of diseases of the World Health Organisation. The day of protest began in 2004, and has been held every year since. This year, IDAHO events will be held in more than 60 countries. IDAHO aims to call for respect for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people worldwide and to highlight that homophobia and transphobia are unacceptable and must be fought against openly.

In Salford, we’ll be flying the Rainbow Flag from the Civic Centre on 17th May in support of IDAHO.

In the UK there have been a number of legal changes in recent years which have led to greater equality for people who are LGBT, however attitudes are slower to change and many experience homophobic abuse and even violence in their daily lives purely on the grounds of sexual orientation. Anti gay violence has risen in Poland, Hungary and other European States.

What is happening around the world?

The day has become a recognised event in approx 30 countries such as Hong Kong, Venezuela, Nepal, Ukraine and Sri Lanka where each have their own unique celebratory events to commemorate the day.  It has been recognised that there are still approx 80 countries where same sex acts are a criminal offence, in many countries punishment is at least 10 years in prison and in some countries the penalty is death.

Some Basic Facts

  • In Brazil every 3 days an LGBT person is brutally murdered
  • In a recent study it was found that statistically one third of young LG people were at a higher risk of self harming or attempting to commit suicide.
  • Hundreds of young LGB children are still facing bullying in schools.
  • In Russia & other European States Pride marches are banned.
  • In India there have been over 30 cases in recent years of LG couples committing suicide after taking poison as they believed their families would disown them or in some cases enforce an arranged marriage.
