Click on above for video.

Vulnerable older people living in Salford have received extra help this winter thanks to funding from Salford City Council and NHS Salford.

The £169,000 investment has been used to support the work that Age Concern Salford and Helping Hands provide across the city, working together to ensure that older people stay safer, warmer and healthier over the winter months.

The service helps residents aged 65 and over who require extra support to help them through any difficulties caused by cold weather.

Services include food shopping; providing warm clothes, blankets and heaters; grit and rock salt delivery and spreading; draft-proofing; home safety and boiler checks and advice on contacting friends, relatives and carers.

Age Concern Salford and Helping Hands staff and volunteers are located throughout the city and are able to respond quickly if the weather takes a turn for the worse.

Councillor Warmisham, Lead Member for Adult Social Care and Health at Salford City Council said: “The recent cold snap reminds us that keeping warm and healthy throughout the winter months is really important for people of all ages, but especially so for the most vulnerable in our communities. The services provided by Age Concern Salford and Helping Hands are making a real difference to older people living in Salford by ensuring their homes are kept warm and preventing more serious health problems.”

Joan Fielder, Chief Executive Officer of Helping Hands said: “Both Age Concern Salford and Helping Hands have lots of experience working across Salford and now we have joined together in this great project to help vulnerable older people in our city this winter.”

To promote the services Age Concern Salford and Helping Hands will be out and about across the city to ensure residents are aware of what help is available.

If you want to find out if Age Concern Salford and Helping Hands can help you call them on 0161 793 9419 – staff will be on hand to help.

More tips on how to stay warm and well are available.

Concessionary Travel Passes

TfGM are responsible for managing more than 420,000 National Concessionary Travel passes for people in Greater Manchester – and the majority of them are due to expire in the next 12 months.

The passes, issued to people aged 60 and over and to people with disabilities, provide free travel on many buses, trams and trains in Greater Manchester. They are part of a national scheme, but we are responsible for administering them locally on behalf of the government.

The majority of passes were first issued five years ago and will start to come up for renewal from April – which will involve a considerable amount of work for our Passes and Permits team.

TfGM have been planning for this for a long time and have worked with stakeholders, including the local authorities and bus companies, to ensure that the renewals process runs smoothly.

The next stage in the process is to send letters to all pass holders six weeks before their pass expires, to explain the process for renewals and prompt them to do it. The first of these letters will start arriving through people’s doors over the next few days.

When they do, other pass holders may start to question when their pass will be renewed; some pass holders may ask you for advice. If they do, please just reassure them that they will receive a letter within six weeks of their pass expiring, and that they do not need to do anything in the meantime.

If you would like to speak to someone about the process for renewing passes, please contact Stuart Johnson, Customer Relations Manager, on 0161 244 1716 or email him at: Stuart.Johnson@tfgm.com

Salford City Councillor John Warmisham has signed up with national older people’s charity Age UK as a Pride of Place advocate for Langworthy Ward.

Age UK’s Pride of Place campaign is encouraging councillors to improve neighbourhoods for people in later life. Many older people are prevented from getting out and about in their area due to barriers such as a lack of public transport, uneven pavements, access to public toilets or places to sit down. Councillors are well placed to help resolve these issues and enable older people to continue playing a fulfilling role in their community.

Councillor Warmisham said: ‘I’m delighted to have this opportunity to work with local older people in Langworthy Ward and hopefully be able to bring about some improvements to the neighbourhoods in the area.

Sharon Brearley, Chief Officer of Age UK Salford said: ‘It’s vital that we invest in our neighbourhoods to ensure older people can go on being active and contribute to our communities for as long as possible – after all we now have more over 60s than under 18s. We are really pleased that Councillor John Warmisham has joined us as a Pride of Place advocate. He will be working with us and with older people locally to improve the neighbourhoods in this area. Together, we can make a real difference.’

Salford City Council is asking for residents’ views on proposed changes to the council’s constitution if voters in the city decide to have an elected mayor.

The constitution is a set of rules that sets out how decisions are taken at the council.

Before a referendum can be held, officers at the council must review the constitution to make sure they have a set of rules in place that sets out how the council would run if the public decide they would like an elected mayor.

The upcoming referendum will give the public the opportunity to vote on the following question:

“Should the electors for the area of Salford elect a Mayor who, with a Cabinet, will be in charge of our local services and lead Salford City Council?”

It was called after the Chief Executive; Barbara Spicer received a valid petition signed by more than five per cent of the city’s electorate. The Local Government Act 2000 states that the council is legally obliged to hold a referendum if more than five per cent of the electorate call for it.

The referendum will be held in January 2012. If the electorate votes in favour of the elected mayor a mayoral election will be held later in 2012. If they vote against it the current system with a leader and cabinet model will remain and it will not be possible to hold a further referendum on this subject for another ten years.

Members of the public can give views and feedback on the council’s recommendations for the new constitution at http://www.salford.gov.uk/em-consultation.htm.

The questionnaire, which is detailed below has been made available to:-

Community Committees – all members of Community Committees will be consulted directly. We will also use Community Committee meetings schedule to broaden the consultation process.

Consultation in Salford Advertiser – we will issue a press release and publish through this local weekly paper the questionnaire.

Council’s Website – the website will run an on-line consultation and feedback format throughout the period of consultation.

Consult all Members of the Council – all Elected Members will be contacted individually to seek their views on the proposals.

Salford Strategic Partnership – the wider forum membership will be contacted directly for their views and feedback.

Questionnaires will also be placed in all four Gateway centres.

Anyone with any questions about the referendum should contact Vin Joseph, Head of Democratic Services at Salford City Council on 0161 793 3009 or email vin.joseph@salford.gov.uk
